How the Sensors Work

Temperature and humidity sensors are carefully installed deep inside the brood nest of each of your hives. These are paired with an external device that sits nearby to capture ambient weather measurements and securely transmit the combined data to our cloud system.

For our apiarists, this continuous stream of telemetry acts as a remote heartbeat. It allows us to seamlessly verify that a colony is active and healthy without having to physically open and disrupt the hive. Beyond basic health monitoring, these metrics provide early insights into internal brood production and can even warn us of impending swarm risks.

Understanding Hive Temperature

A healthy honey bee colony acts like a single warm-blooded organism. To protect their developing brood, bees actively heat and cool the hive to maintain a strict internal temperature of roughly 34.5°C, completely independent of the weather outside.

By comparing the Internal Temperature against the External Weather, we can instantly verify the health and population strength of the colony.

Struggling or Empty Hive

Without enough bees to regulate heat, the internal temperature helplessly mirrors the outside weather, rising during the day and dropping at night.

    How it works

    Every season we take a sample of the honey from your hives and send it to our partner lab for eDNA analysis. Throughout the beekeeping season, your bees will have travelled in a 5km radius around your site. This analysis helps us to map out their journey and understand what plants they have foraged on, and what other insects or animals they may have interacted with.
